Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new model to estimate mechanical behavior of plastic-rubber composite materials (PRCM). The PRCM are made by means of dynamic vulcanization with a blend of polypropylene (PP) and ethylene propylene-diene rubber (EPDM). The dynamic vulcanization yields two-phase structure, in which the EPDM particles are dispersed into the PP matrix. In this study, the experiments are carried out for the PRCM with 50%, 60% and 70% volume fractions of EPDM. Finite element analysis (FEA) and a mechanical analysis are performed to discuss the deformation mechanism of the PRCM. A mechanical model based on the cellular solid structure is proposed to explain the modulus of PRCM. The model reveals that the deformation of the PRCM is attributed to the bending and shearing deformations at the PP cell walls.
