Abstract

We tried to make blends of amorphous polyamide and various rubbers such as acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer (NBR), isobutylene-isoprene copolymer (IIR), natural rubber (NR) and ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM). In order to improve the compatibility of polyamide (PA) with rubber (Rub), we used alkylphenolformaldehyde-resin (PR), which is reactive to both PA and Rub, as a compatibilizer. We first synthesized a copolymer of amorphous polyamide (AmPA) and PR, and by mixing PR- AmPA copolymer and respective Rub, various blends were obtained. By the measurement of mechanical properties of the Blends, the order of compatibility of Rub to AmPA was found to be NBR>EPDM>NR>IIR. In case of NBR, it was found that the matrix and the dispersed phase were NBR and AmPA, respectively, and PR played as a good compatibilizer to afford good dispersion of AmPA phase in Rub matrix.
