The non-recurrent laryngeal nerve is an anomaly of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. This is probably due to the process of anomalous nerve and blood vessel development from the embryonic branchial arches, and is especially associated with an anomalous origin of the right subclavian artery from the aortic arch.
We have experienced 5 cases with a non-recurrent laryngeal nerve during surgeries for thyroid diseases over the past 30 years.
Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury is one of the most important complications of surgery for thyroid diseases. Therefore, head and neck surgeons must be aware of the possibility of a non-reccurent laryngeal nerve not only in thyroid operations, but also in neck dissections on the right side.
