Abstract

We investigated the influence of the extra corporeal circulation (ECC) on the cytokines. We studied 32 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting. We collected arterial blood samples at immediately after start of ECC, immediately after termination of ECC and 6, 12, 18 hours after operation. We measured the levels of cytokines(IL6, IL8), polymorphonuclear elastase (PMN-E), lactate and pyruvate. The levels of IL6, IL8 and PMN-E were maximally elevated at immediately after termination of ECC. Positive correlation was observed between IL6 at immediately after termination of ECC and the duration of ECC and aortic crossclamp (r=0.52, 0.51). Negative correlation was observed between minimum temperature of esophagus and PMN-E at 18 hours after operation (r=-0.67). Minimum temperature of rectum correlated with IL6, PMN-E and pyruvate at 18 hours after operation (r=-0.51, -0.58, -0.57). We concluded that the duration of ECC and aortic crossclamp affected IL6 at immediately after termination of ECC, and minimum temperature of esophagus and rectum affected IL6 and PMN-E at 18 hours after operation.
