An assessment of spatial distribution of seismic input motions and damages of future earthquakes is a fundamental procedure in mitigation programs of seismic risk. As a result, seismic zonation maps have been made to evaluate seismic motions and various risks. In this paper, a methodology for making seismic zonation maps are overviewed by reviewing related papers and necessary future development is also discussed. Zonation maps are classified into two kinds of macrozonation and microzonation maps from an objective area size. In general, macrozonation maps deal with seismicity in country level and microzonation maps indicate spatial distribution of seismic hazard and risks in urban area.
First, macrozonation maps are briefly reviewed classifying two processing methods of statistical and deterministic ways, which is based on activities of existing seismic sorces. Then microzonation maps are reviewed in detail. The methods for evaluating spatial distribution of seismic input motions are introduced from the point of observational and analytical ways. Zonation maps indicating various kinds of risks of structures, facilities and earthquake fires are also reviewed.
Finally, future problems to be attacked are discussed based on the preceding review. These are consideration of non-linearity of surface ground, extension of the territory for zonation and application of GIS (Geographical Information System) technique to zonation.
