Susceptibility of spotted halibut, Verasper variegatus to the ciliate, Cryptocaryon irritans, and the monogenean, Neoheterobothrium hirame, was compared with that of Japanese flounder, Paralichthy olivaceus, by challenge trials. Cryptocaryon irritans trophozoits were found on the gills and the skin surface of both species when the fishes were exposed to C. irritans theronts (infective stage) in the same aquaria. However, the number of trophozoits on the gills or on the skin of spotted halibut were significantly lower than that of Japanese flounder. In case of the monogenean infection, they were not found on either the gills or the oral cavity wall of spotted halibut during the experiment when both species were exposed to the eggs of the parasite in the same aquaria. In contrast, Japanese flounder were infected with the monogenea parasites, which were found on both the gills and the oral cavity wall. These results showed that the susceptibility of the spotted halibut to both parasites was low, compared with the Japanese flounder. In Japan, C. irritans infections often occur among cultured fishes resulting in significant economic losses. Considering the susceptibility against these parasites, the spotted halibut may be a promising species for a stable production in aquaculture where these parasitic infections have come into a serious problem.
