We investigated the recurrence rate and time when recurrences occurred in oral cancer.<BR>Seventy (19.7%) of 360 cases who received initial therapy with radical intent were recurrent at the primary site. 80% of recurrences at the primary site took place within the first 2 years after initial treatment. The mean period after initial therapy to recurrence was about 1 year in T4 or N2 cases, 2 years in T1-3, N0-1, middle or high maligancy cases and 3 years in low malignancy cases.<BR>We achieved the additional therapies, that is, external radiation, adjuvant or neo-adjuvant chemoterapy, maintenace chemotherapy and immunotherapy, accompanied with surgery or interstitial radiation as main therapy.<BR>Effects of these additional therapies on recurrent pattern were investigated. Maintenace chemotherapy and immunotherapy improved the recurrence rate. Adjuvant chemotherapy and immunotherapy delayed the time when recurrences occurred.<BR>We must observe the patients after initial therapy considering with tumor malignancy, stage and contents of adjuvant therapy.
