What explains settlement location in the Jomon Period? This study reports the relation between settlement location and the natural environment, especially aquatic adaptation, at Tokyo Bay and Kujukuri Plain of the coastal Simosa Upland in Boso Peninsula.<br>A number of settlements with shell mounds were distributed around the former Tokyo Bay in the First Jomon Period (ca. 5, 500-5, 200 14Cyrs BP). These settlements show assimilation to the environment of the Holocene. Furthermore, all the settlements were located on uplands and terraces facing the valley head. They overlap the spring zone, and springs are located within a radius of 200 meters around the settlement. The people usually refined nuts (e. g. horse chestnuts, acorns), a process that requires much water from springs. Settlement locations in Jomon Period reflected the presence of springs and showd adaptation to the aquatic environment.
