A totally implantable electrohydraulic artificial heart system was improved toward chronic animal experiments. Following points were studied: Blood pumps were redesigned to increase stroke volume and to decrease fluid resistance against driving oil flow for better system efficiency. A trajectory control method of motor speed was adopted to increase efficiency. A transcutaneous energy transfer (TET) system and an internal battery were integrated with the artificial heart. Anatomical fitting of the system and allowable heat generation characteristics of the system were confirmed with an acute animal experiment with a 57kg calf. A totally implantable artificial heart, which can produce 8L/min of maximum cardiac output and 12% of maximum efficiency, was developed. The TET system could drive the artificial heart system without the decline of pump performance. The internal battery could drive the system over one hour. The whole system was implanted in the body of the calf and difference between an energy converter temperature and the body temperature was less than four degrees centigrade. In conclusion, the performance of the developed total artificial heart system is enough to move the evaluation stage by chronic animal experiments.
