Abstract

Ten Years' Experience with Mitral Valvular Reoperation using the St. Jude Medical Valve. From January 1985 to December 1994, 80patients underwentmitral valvular reoperationusingthe St. Jude Medical (SJM) valve. Meanage of the 25 female and 55 male patients was 52.4 years. These patientsconsisted of two groups; 36 patientsreceivedmitral valvereplacement (MVR) had previously undergone mitral valverepair and 44 had previously received MVR. The actuarial free rates at 7 years were compared with a groupof 24 patients received MVR for initial valvular operation. (1) Actuarial survival: 80.5vs 90.9 (NS), (2) complication-free: 80.2vs 95.0 (NS). Linearizedrates for hemolysis, thromboembolism, and anticoagulant-relatedhemorrhage were 2.5%, 1.94% and 0.76% patient-years, respectively. Although the precise mechanism of hemolysisremains unknown, we believe that the SJM valve is anexellentmechanical prosthesis forevenmitral valvular reoperation.
