We have previously reported the inhibitory effect of heparinized hydrophilic polymer (AnthronTM) on in vitro bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. In the present study, we employed polyurethane catheters coated with Anthron for the patients with malignant obstructive jaundice to perform percutaneous biliary drainage for a long period Following implantation into the bile duct, catheters were withdrawn to check for bacterial adhesion to the lumen by scanning electron microscopy and bacterial culture. In bacterial cultures of withdrawn catheters, only Enterncoccus faecium was identified While in the lumens of silicone catheters used as controls, severe biofilm formations were found, in which 6 strains gram-negative and 2 strains gram-positive bacteria were identified These results suggest that the clinical use of the catheters coated with Anthron in the biliary system is considered to be effective in preventing catheter-related obstruction and infections.
