Abstract

To further understand the phytoremediation of the fresh water environment and animal feed production using water hyacinth (<i>Eichhornia crassipes</i> (Mart.) Solms), we investigated the seasonal dynamics of population structure and chemical composition of the plant in a basin of the Aso region of Kyushu district.<br>The live phytomass was increased from 31.2gDM m<sup>-2</sup> at transplantation (May 1) to 2543.3 g DM m<sup>-2</sup> at 165 days of cultivation (Oct. 13), after which the phytomass decreased. The estimated maximum growth rate of the live phytomass was 32.6g DM m<sup>-2</sup> day<sup>-1</sup> at 84 days (July 24). The optimum leaf area index was estimated as 6.9. Net assimilation rate of the live phytomass was 6.5 g DM m<sup>-2</sup> day<sup>-1</sup> between transplantation (May 1) and 45 days of cultivation (June 15), after which the rate decreased linearly. Crude protein (CP) content and <i>in vitro</i> dry matter degradability (IVDMD) of the live phytomass were 10.0 to 21.5% and 47.1 to 60.0%, respectively. CP content and IVDMD were higher in the leaf blade, petiole, rhizome, and stolon than in the root. The amount of nitrogen uptake by the plant was 45.6 g N m<sup>-2</sup> year<sup>-1</sup>.
