- Effects of a new antiarrhythmic drug, NIP-142, on atrial flutter in the dog

A new benzopyran derivative, NIP-142, blocks IKACh and is effective in suppressing vagallyinduced atrial fibrillation in the dog. We studied effects of NIP-142 on atrial flutter in the dog. In 6 dogs, atrial flutter due to reentry was induced after placing the intercaval obstacle. NIP-142 (3 mg/kg) terminated atrial flutter in all 6 dogs without changes in atrial flutter cycle length and prevented reinitiation of atrial flutter. NIP-142 prolonged atrial refractoriness at faster basic cycle length without changes in conduction time. These results indicate that the efficacy of NIP-142 on atrial flutter is probably due to class III antiarrhythmic effect different from selective l Kr blockers.
