Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the aging of activity patterns of masticatory muscles without the effect of tooth loss, and factors affecting them using normalized electromyographic linear envelopes (EMG LEs). EMG LEs normalized with respect to amplitude and stroke were processed from surface EMGs of bilateral masseter and anterior temporal muscles. Experimental tasks were carried out using nine kinds of foods with different textures.
Eight elderly and fourteen young dentate volunteers and six elderly complete denture wearers participated in this study. Normalized EMG LEs were evaluated by cluster analysis. Statistical parameters revealed that elderly and young dentate volunteers changed and complete denture wearers did not change co-activities between muscles during mastication of various foods.
Factor analysis of normalized EMG LEs of all muscles from six elderly and six young dentate volunteers and six elderly complete denture wearers was performed. Activity patterns of all muscles from elderly and young dentate volunteers were related to the first factor in almost all foods. The factor was regarded as survival of teeth.
It was found that activity patterns of masticatory muscles in the dentate elderly were hardly different from the young and that tooth loss was a large factor affecting the activity.
