Abstract

The following were researched: number of teeth with near-occlusal contacts for groups of 11 controls (4 males, 7 females) and 23 patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD)(9 males, 14 females); the ratio of the number of teeth with near-occlusal contacts appearing in each tooth position to the number of subjects in each group; and the distribution of near-occlusal contacts under electromyogram (EMG) biofeedback in each group.
The results were as follows:
1. There was a tendency for patients to have fewer teeth with near-occlusal contacts than controls, but it was not statistically significant.
2. The appearance rate of second molars with near-occlusal contacts in patients was significantly higher than that of other tooth regions (p<0.05).
3. Regarding the distribution of near-occlusal contacts, there was a tendency for controls to have near-occlusal contacts on both left and right sides. On the other hand, patients have a tendency to show near-occlusal contacts on one side.
Based on the results, it was suggested that there was a relationship between TMD and near-occlusal contacts under EMG biofeedback.
