Abstract

The objectives of this study were to obtain high-precision data of mandibular movements in the working side condyle of normal subjects, and to show the difference between working side condylar movement in normal subjects and patients with anterior disk displacement with reduction. Thus, movements were analyzed using a six degrees of jaw movement tracking device.<BR>1. The movable range of the working side condyle was 0.58±0.26mm in the forward and backward direction, 0.73±0.24mm in the lateral direction, and 0.58±0.19mm in the vertical direction, in the normal subjects. In the patients with anterior disk displacement with reduction, on the other hand, the values were 0.96±0.60mm in the forward and backward direction, 1.19±0.60mm in the lateral direction, and 1.27±0.70mm in the vertical direction.<BR>2. Concerning the amount of shift of the working side condyle in the patients with anterior disk displacement with reduction, three-dimensional shift (p=0.035), lateral shift (p=0.017), downward shift (p=0.020), and vertical shift (p=0.005) were significantly greater compared to the values in the normal subjects.
