Abstract

This paper describes a proposal for a crystallization kinetic model by introducing a new effectivenuclei concept for the simplified analysis of crystal size distribution (CSD) obtained from a steady state CMSMPR crystallizer with agglomeration. In this concept, particles are classified by size into “fine crystals” and “crystals” with respect to agglomeration characteristics. The fine crystals can agglomerate with the crystals and with one another, while the crystals can not agglomerate.“Effective nuclei” is defined as crystals of a size that fall between fine crystals and crystals. Additionally, the combined size enlargement of a crystal caused by agglomeration and molecular level crystal growth is defined as the effective crystal growth. For the crystals, a simple population balance equation that avoids the agglomeration term was obtained. A simple effective growth rate equation is introduced to solve it. An analytical solution was successfully obtained Straight, upward and downward curvatures in CSD on a semi-logarithmic paper are mathematically described.
