Abstract

With the aim of mitigating chloride-stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of stainless clad steel by converting tensile residual stress to compressive stress, we propose two methods. After the surface of the hot welded portion was cooled with water, the tensile residual stress of the welded stainless clad steel was converted to compressive stress. The chloride SCC in heat affected zone was found to be completely mitigated. In addition, there is the shot-peening using partially stabilized zirconia shot. Shot peening produced a metallic bright surface with compressive residual stress as high as -70kgf/mm<SUP>2</SUP>. The paper discusses the characteristic features of chloride SCC in stainless clad steel sampled from a salt producing plant.
