Abstract

Anomalous posterior vena cava with azygos continuation was found in four calves. In all cases, the posterior vena cava which joined the left and right common iliac venis entered the left or right azygos vein. In case 1, the renal vein from the fused kidney did not enter the posterior vena cava, but received the ovarian, adrenal and hepatic venis, and emptied into the right atrium at the normal position of the posterior vena cava. This venous anomalies probably resulted from failure of connection between the subcardinal and supracardinal veins during fetal life. In case 2 and 3, the renal vein (case 3) or veins (case 2) entered the anomalous posterior vena cava. These anomalies probably resulted from failure of union between the subcardinal vein and the liver. In case 4, the renal vein was not investgated because the abdominal viscera had been removed.
