Thirty-five females with rectocele, who had received surgery between 1997 and 1998, were investigated. Studying two groups of patients were made of a retrospective analysis : Group L : the rectocele diameter was greater than 30mm, in 18 patients (mean 38.4 mm) ; Group S : the diameter was smaller than 30 mm, in 17 patients (mean 22.9mm). There were statistically significant differences between the preoperative state and the postoperative state relative to a feeling of incomplete emptying (83.3 vs. 38.9 percent ; P<0.01), use of laxatives (66.7 vs. 33.3 percent ; P<0.05), and evacuation time (6.2 vs. 3.6 minutes ; P<0.05) in Group L. In conclusion, we have found rectocele diameter to be of great value in determining when surgry is indicated.
