Abstract

We report a case of a 67-year-old woman who developed renal metastasis 19 months after a left mastectomy for breast carcinoma. It was in Stage III a with positive lomph nodes. One year after the operation, liver metastasis was found and subsequently a hepatic arterial catheter was inserted for chemotherapy (1500mg of 5FU for 48 hrs every two week) under laparotomy. The liver metastasis had been kept at partial remission status for 8 months, when right renal metastasis 5×5cm in size was incidentally found by an abdominal CT scan. Right nephrectomy was performed. Pathologically it was Metastasis from the carcinoma of the breast. She died of progression of liver metastasis in spite of general chemotherapy 14 months after the nephrectomy. Renal metastasis from carcinoma of the breast is uncommon and only seven operated cases have been reported in the world including our case. For early diagnosis of renal metastasis from breast cancer, exploration using abdominal CT scan would be mandatory while the patient is followed after operation for the primary foci. This rare case is reported together with a review of the literature.
