This paper presents a case of retroperitoneal liposarcoma which solitarily metastasized to the soft part without local recurrence.
A 75-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because he felt an abdominal tumor. Abdominal CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor rich in fat at the retroperitoneum. The tumor was removed and the pathological diagnosis was mucinous loposarcoma. No adjuvant therapies were added. While he was followed in the clinic, a tumor appeared in the left chest wall. Needle aspiration biospy cytology revealed similar pathologic findings to those of the specimen taken at the former operation. Metastasis of the retroperitoneal liposarcoma to the chest wall was diagnosed. No other distant metastases were revealed by CT scans of the head, chest, and abdomen. No local recurrence was also detected. So, an extirpation of the tumor was made. Thereafter left axillary lymph node metastasis occurred and was removed. However, no local recurrence nor distant metastasis has appeared up to now.
It has recently been reported that mucinous liposarcoma morphologically transfers to round cell type and resultantly has an intensfied malignancy to acquire metastatic ability. Further, a variety of biological markers have been explored. We think that such markers should be introduced as prognostic factors or estimating factors for efficacy of adjuvant therapies in future.
