To evaluate the function of tree roots in preventing landslides, in-situ direct shear tests were carried out in a nursery where 7 to 10 years Cryptomeria japonica D. Don were standing and the reinforced shear resistance by the roots was quantitatively measured. 31 in-situ shear tests of rooted soil showed -0.034 to 0.077 kgf/cm2 stronger shear resistance than soil failure criterion without root. In the shear tests of 0.09 and 0.14 kgf/cm2 normal stress, especially, the reinforced strength by the roots reached at 20 to 34% of the soil shear strength. Furthermore, the root reinforcement model proposed for estimating the root reinforced strength was confirmed by comparing the measured reinforced strength by the in-situ shear tests and the model calculation. As the result, both was almost coincided if lack of uniformity of soil strength was eliminated.
