Abstract

A 77-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of right lower abdominal pain, and an emergency operation was performed. At laparotomy, the appendix swelled like a sausage 12×4cm in size and was twisted clockwise by 360 degree at the root of the appendix. An appendectomy was performed with a clinical diagnosis of torsion of appendiceal mucocele. Preoperative diagnosis was relatively difficult, because it presents clinical symptoms similar to appendicitis and is a rare entity. However, it may be possible by CT scan of the abdomen which shows a cystic mass in the right lower abdomen and a projection of a beak in shape toward the ileocecal region.<br> We present a case of torsion of appendiceal mucocele which is rare in the Japanese literature, with some bibliographical comments.
