Abstract
This paper describes two operated cases of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.
Case 1: A 63-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of abdominal distention, right sided abdominal pain and pyrexia in August 1992. With close examination no definitive diagnosis could be, ade preoparatively. Exploratory laparotomy showed a plate like hard mass on the ascending colon, many tumors on the retroperitoneum and intestinal wall. Histopathologically it was diagnosed as epithelial type of malignant mesothelioma. After laparotomy, systemic chemotherapy with cisplatin and epirubicin hydrochloride was performed.
Case 2: A 54-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of abdominal fullness in April 1993. Ultrasonography and CT scan of the abdomen revealed a full mass in the abdominal cavity. Exploratory lapalotomy showed a full tumor in the abdominal cavity and cisplatin was administrered intraperitoneally. Histopathologically it was diagnosed as mixed type of malignant mesothelioma. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is relatively rare.
It prones to lack of subjective symptoms and progresses rapidly, and hence it presents difficulty in diagnosis and has a poor prognosis. When we encounter a case with abnormal abdominal signs and are not able to make the definite diagnosis, early surgical intervention would be the best of choice by entertaining a possible existence of the disease.
