Teratoma often involves fat tissue, calcified substances, and hair mass, and commonly appears in the pelvic cavity, especially the ovary. In this paper a case of matured teratoma of the retroperitoneum is described.
A 29-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of right hypochondralgia developed after a meal. Abdominal simple Xp showed two calcified tooth-like calcification on the right side to the 3rd lumber vertebrae. Abdominal ultrasonography, abdominal CT and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a heterogenous tumor with cysts and calcification in it. From the findings a diagnosis of teratoma arising in the retroperitoneal space was made. The patient was operated on. The tumor compressed the inferior vena cava from the rear of the vein, and had a diameter of about 15cm. Histologically it was a typical matured teratoma involving fat tissue, cartilage, sebaceous glands, bronchial mucosa, and hair mass.
Retroperitoneal tumors represent about 0.2% of all tumors, and among of these tumors teratomas occur in a low frequency. It is said that malignant change can occur in about 10% of the teratomas. Early and complete removal of the tumor should be the treatment of choice.
