Abstract

In a recent 17-year period from 1976 to 1992 we have experienced a total of 1045 resected patients with colorectal cancer, and six (0.6%) out of 1045 patients had a signet-ring cell carcinoma. In this study these six patients were clinicopathologically examined. There are 3 males and 3 females with a mean age of 68.8 years. In 4 cases, the carcinomas were located in the right side of the colon. Five of six patients had an invasive carcinoma from macroscopic inspection. All patients had an advanced cancer with the depth of wall invasion classified as ss (a1) or deeper, and with positive regional lymph nodes. Histological stage revealed that all patients presented in stage IV. Although 3 patients had peritoneal dissemination, none of the patients demonstrated the metastasis to the liver. All patients underwent noncurative resection and carried very poor prognosis. In order to gain further improvement of therapeutic results, early diagnosis, appropriate selection of operation, and proper follow up are important.
