Abstract

A 61-year-old woman with varices of the left lower limb associated with idiopathic thrombocytepenic purpura was admitted to our hospital because of a left calf pain. Splenectomy had been performed and oral steroid was administered, but the platelet count was under 5×104/mm3. So, we avoided stripping operation for her bleeding tendency and performed sclerotherapy and high ligation of the small saphenous vein. Left calf pain and varices completely disappeared and no recurrence has occurred for about a half year. During the treatment, the platelet count slightly decreased from 4.5×104/mm3 to 2.8×104/mm3 2 days after sclerotherapy, but recovered to 4.7×104/mm3 5 days after sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy can be a choice for treating varices of the lower extremities in a patient who had a bleeding tendency.
