Abstract

A 60-year-old man who had been on hemodialysis for 4 months was diagnosed as having a rectal cancer. Resection of the rectum was performed and the specimen was diagnosed with well differentiated adenocarcinoma. Twenty-two months later, the patient was diagnosed as having a gastric cancer. Distal gastrectomy was performed. It was diagnosed as having a gastric cancer. Distal gastrectomy was performed. It was signet ring cell carcinomain stage IVb. The postoperative course was uneventful for both procedures. He died of carcinomatous peritonitis 15 months after the gastrectomy, but a good quality of life was maintained until then.<br> In following up a patient on hemodialysis with cancer, the possible existence of a synchronous or metachronous tumor should always be considered. We also emphasize that operations for patients on hemodyalysis are worthwhile, if the surgical indications are appropriate.
