Abstract
We experienced a curatively resected case of early esophageal cancer following a remission of reflux esophagitis. A 34-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a poststernal pain and diagnosed with reflux esophatitis due to hiatal hernia. Although he was managed with conservative therapy, no symptomatic remission was attained. So Nissen's fundoplication was performed. The residual ulcerative lesion was recognized after the operation, but the postoperative course was uneventful. Eighteen months after the operation, pathohistological diagnosis with endoscopic biopsy revealed Group V, and a radical operation for the esophageal cancer was performed. Histopathologically, adenocarcinoma localized in the mucosal layer was confirmed. Esophageal cancer is a probable complication of reflux esophagitis, especially Barrett's esophagus, so the clinical course of patients with reflux esophagitis should be carefully observed.
