Among 476 patients undergoing esophagectomy for a thoracic esophageal cancer at the department from 1985 to 1993, about 300 patients were subjected to a questionnaire survey asking the postoperative quality of life (QOL). We could recover the filled questionnaire from 163 patients and evaluated their QOLs.<br> They answered almost satisfactory about conditions of eating, living, and nutrition (body-weight change). As to physical especially breaking wind, which was most common complaint. When QOL was evaluated by esophageal reconstruction procedures, good QOL was remarkable after reconstruction via posterior mediastinal route. When evsaluated in terms of lapse of time, no correlation was observed between physical symptoms and postoperative period. With examination of postoperative period. But conditions of eating and living were getting better after one year, body weight gainrn after two years, and all factors were best after five years.
