Abstract

A 58-years-old male patient was admitted to the Chukyo Hospital with the complaint of severe lumbago and anemia.
IgA-λ type multiple myeloma was diagnosed for him by the presence of M-component as revealed by serum electrophoresis on cellulose acetate membrane and agar gel immunoelectrophoresis, and of the plasma cell proliferation in bone marrow.
The patient responded excellently to melphalan treatment with disappearance of lumbago and decrease of serum M-component and bone marrow plasma cells. Stomach cancer was found later, though without apparent abdominal distress, by upper gastrointestinal fluoroscopy which was performed to examine the cause of continued presence of feces occult blood. He was operated for the stomach cancer because of good course of multiple myelom. The extirpated tumor was of size with diameters of 5.5 and 6.5 cm having ulceration (Borrmann, type III), and adenocarcinoma with scanty plasma cell proliferation was diagnosed by histologic examination.
The association and relationship between mulitple myeloma and cancer were reviewed and prognostic significance of operation of cancer in the course of multiple myeloma was discussed.
