Seventy-five tumors of 50 cases of minute (1.0cm or less in diameter) papillary carcinoma of the thyroid initially operated on at the hospital in a recent 16.5-year period were histologically studied, Thirty-seven cases had a solitary and 13 cases had multiple tumors. Their ages ranged from 26 to 74 years old, with an average of 49.8. The male-to-female ratio was one-to-49. These 75 tumors were able to be classified into 5 histopathological types according to the presence of capsula and volume of stroma; namely, non-capsulated and non-sclerosing type (12 tumors), non-capsulated sclerosing type (24), capsulated non-sclerosing type (8), capsulated sclerosing type (24), and other usual type (24). The tumor diameters ranged from 0.1 to 1.0cm with an average of 0.67±0.26cm. Non-capsulated and non-sclerosing, non-capsulated sclerosing, and capsulated non-sclerosing type were significantly smaller than capsulated sclerosing and usual type. Calcification was observed in 36.% of all tumors (27/75); in 37.5% of non-capsulated sclerosing type, in 85.7% of capsulated sclerosing type, and in 50.0% of usual type. Thyroid tissues surrounding the cancers has some associated lesions in a frequency of 54.0% (27/50 cases). Among of them, adenomatous goiter was the most common disease. Lymph nodes metastasis was seen in 63.3% (31/49 cases).
