Two cases of psoas abscess after a rectal resection for a rectal cancer are reported.
Case 1: a 69-year-old woman developed psoas abscess 14 months after a low anterior resection for an advanced rectal cancer. Her initial symptom was right lower abdominal pain. She was treated by antibiotic and her symptom becane better. But the lesion increased in size in image findings, and a drainage operation was performed.
Case 2: A 66-year-old woman with advanced rectal cancer had a fever and left lower abdominal pain 2 months after a low anterior resection for the cancer. Multiple cystic lesion with capsule in the left psoas muscle was found by MRI, and the psoas abscess was highly suspected. The lesion disappeared by administration of antibiotics.
In both patients oral antineoplasms had been administered after the operation for advanced rectal cancer. Especially the disease occurred in case 2 when the patient was in leukopenia. It is thought that the onset of psoas abscess might be ralated to the immunosuppressive state of the patients.
