Abstract
In this paper, a case of left traumatic diaphragmatic rupture due to a traffic accident is described.
A 39-year-old man was injured in a traffic accident was seen at the hospital. The chest X-ray examination showed fractures of the left ribs (4th, 5th and 6th), left lung contusion and an abnormal gas finding which protruded to the thoracic cavity. Left traumatic diaphragmatic rupture was suspected and the gastrography with gastric tube was performed. The gastric tube was inserted in the abnormal gas finding and then the gastrography demonstrated gastric plicae.
With the definite diagnosis of left traumatic diaphragmatic rupture, an emergency operation was performed with a complete closure of the ruptured diaphragma.
Though traumatic diaphragmatic rupture is a rare entity, we should entertain it as a possible diagnosis and observe closely the clinical course in a recent background factor that chest injuries due to traffic accident have been increasing.
