Abstract

A 63-year-old man was referred to the hospital because of left abdominal pain and an abdominal mass. There were slight tenderness and a palpable child's head sized mass in the left abdomen. Inflammatory mass arising in the mesenterium or retroperitoneum of the descending colon was suspected by abdominal ultrasonography and abdominal CT, A opertion was performed because hidden malignancy could not be ruled out. At laparotomy, a mass was found in mesenterium of the descending colon which was adhered to a part of the descending colon and omentum. The mass was excised. The excised specimen revealed a 15×11×6cm mass with capsule, white in color and elastic hard. It was diagnosed as mesenteric panniculitis histopathologically. Only 58 cases of mesenteric panniculitis including the present case have been reported in Japaense literature, indicating that is a rare disease. Mesenteric panniculitis often mimics other malignancies, and this case also presented difficulty in differential diagnosis.
