Abstract

A rare case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the breast is reported. A 33-year-old female had multiple masses in the right breast. Excisional biopsy was performed on one. Microscopic examination indicated a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Since there was no distant metastasis, extended radical mastectomy and breast reconstruction using transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flap were performed. Surgical specimens stained with hematoxylin-eosin revealed not only papillo-tubular adenocarcinoma but also squamous cell carcinoma, which showed intercellular bridge and formation. The immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin revealed positive staining in the squamous cell carcinoma portion. The immunohistochemical staining of fresh frozen specimens revealed no reaction against either the estrogen receptor or progesterone receptor, but reactions against c-erbB2 product and epidermal growth factor receptor were positive. There was a lymph node metastasis in the parasternal region, which was histologically consistent with a squamous cell carcinoma.
