Abstract

We investigated the factors of decreasing the mobility in epileptic patients. The subjects were 11 cases with epilepsy who became bed-ridden after the onset of epilepsy though they had been able to walk alone. Those who became bed-ridden within 6 years after the onset of epilepsy showed the following characteristics; frequent seizures such as more than once a day, undetermined or generalized epilepsy. On the contrary, the main causes seemed to be the social problems such as decrease in exercise or caring ability of the families after the patients' school age in those who became bed-ridden after 6 years from the onset of epilepsy. Not only the appropriate treatment for epilepsy from the onset but also physical, mental and social rehabilitation is very important for epileptic patients to prevent the decrease of mobility.
