Abstract

We developed and clinically applied a superior articular cavity pumping lavage system, which allows lavage of the superior articular cavity by a single puncture. The subjects were 32 patients (32 joints) who underwent this procedure for closed lock with pain in the TMJ. The results were compared with those in 23 patient (23 joints) who underwent arthrocentesis. This procedure was performed by using 3-way cocks, to which a line of physiologic saline and 2 lines from syringes were connected. Physiologic saline was infused through one syringe, the 3-way cocks were manipulated by maintaining compression, and the lavage fluid was recovered in the other syringe. The effect of the treatment was evaluated according to a 5-grade scale based on the criteria for evaluating therapeutic results at our department. The response rate by this procedure was 84.4%, and that by arthrocentesis was 82.6%.
