We studied clinical and histopathological relationships between globus pharyngeus and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Lower esophageal mucosal tissue was obtained endoscopically from 172 patients who complained of bad gastrointestinal conditions and visited the out-patient clinics of internal medicine. In 38 (55.9%) of 68 patients who complained of abnormal sensation of the pharynx or larynx, GERD was identified histologically. On the other hand, in twenty-eight (26.9%) of 104 patients who did not complain of abnormal sensation of the pharynx or larynx, GERD was identified. A statistical difference was seen between the two groups. Lower esophageal mucosal tissue was also obtained from 18 patients with globus pharyngeus who visited the out-patient clinics of otolaryngology. Beforehead, thyroid disease, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and other apparent origins of abnormal sensation of the pharynx or larynx were excluded. In nine (50.0%) of 18 patients, GERD were identified histologically. It was suggested that approximately 50% of patients who had abnormal sensation of the pharynx or larynx was included in GERD.
