Selective transvascular brain cooling was performedwith perfusion of 5°C crystalloid solution into the vertebral artery in dogs. Brain temperatures were cooled downto 33°C within 3 minutes, and 2°C within 7 minutes.Cold and diluted venous blood was taken out from thejugular vein, and dialysed with hemofiltrator, warmedwith a warmer, and returned into the inferior vena cava.During brain cooling the rectral temperature was keptwithin mild hypothermia. After deep hypothermia of thebrain was maintained for 60 minutes, dogs survived without any neurological deficits, and any ischemic changeswere demonsrated with TTC stain and Ca l in H. E stain after 10 weeks survival.
Brain vascular edema introduced by a cold injury (160°C) was suppressed even 60 minutes before the start of brain cooling. Glutamate was not demonstrated around the cold injury of the brain during the experiment.
This mehod is supposed to apply to neuroprotection within therapeutic time window after the head trauma and brain attack, and also to bloodless surgeries without any blood transfusion anymore.
