The knowledge and skill level of the teachers who belong to the Osaka Prefecture Educational Committee were examined in the basic life support (BLS) courses supported by the staffs of the Japanese Society of Reanimatology in 1999. After a written examination to confirm the level of the trainee's knowledge, BLS practice was then performed in small-group style, and a final BLS skill examination was scheduled. The results for time factors and skill level in practice were evaluated by analysis on recording paper for 219 participants. More than half of the trainees (54.8%) have had previous BLS training experience. On the written test, the group with previous BLS experience had a higher rate of correct answers than did the group without previous BLS experience (p<0.001), and BLS experience in the past had a good effect on maintenance of proper knowledge about BLS. However, the rates of excessive ventilation, irregular ventilation pattern and incorrect compression site of heart massage were 40%, 54% and 47%, respectively, among the participants. Though the interval needed from mouth-to-mouth ventilation to heart massage was shorter in the group with previous BLS experience (p <0.005), there were still many points for improvement in BLS skill level.
