Advantages, problems, and the future of day surgery for inguinal hernias in adults were investigated.
One hundred and twenty-two patients who had day surgery between November 1997 and September 2000 were evaluated. For the surgical procedure, all underwent the mesh plug method under peridural anesthesia. The reported to the clinic for examinations 1, 3, and 7 days after surgery and responded to questions on pain at the surgical wound and the degree of personal satisfaction. There were also questions on the economic aspects of the precedure.
No surgical wound infections were recognized and surgical pain was limited to what one can tolerate. Up to the present, no recurrence of hernia has been recognized. The degree of personal satisfaction was computed to be 97.5%. The reason for dissatisfaction was the burden of returning to the hospital. The medical expenses of day surgery amounted to only 60% of the cost of a conventional procedure that necessitates a hospital stay of 3 days and 2 nights, and therefore financial yield of the hospital increased.
It was found that day surgery for an adult inguinal hernia is associated with a high degree of personal satisfaction, a saving in medical costs, and a greater financial yield. The problem is a physical and psychological burdens on patients who are required to return to the hospital after surgery. It was believed that it is necessary to reduce these burdens in the future.
