Occurrence of postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and its risk factors were assessed in patients who had undegone total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in our hospital for the years of August 1993 through July 1997. The patients enrolled were 127 and 110 for the respective operation groups, and DVT was surveyed by venography two weeks after the surgery. Postperative DVT was detected in 21.1% (95% Confidence interval: 14.4-29.2%) of patients in the THA group and 47.8% (38.4-57.3%) of those in the TKA group. The incidence of DVT was found to be significantly correlated with the type of surgery (p<0.001), the body mass index (BMI) (p<0.001) and age (p=0.004) among eight possible risk factors including other five, i.e., sex, underlying diseases, side of operated legs, time required for surgery and application of bone cement. Based on the results, we propose a multivariate model for the probability of postoperative DVT (P): log (P/1-P)=-5.60+0.98 a+0.27b+0.11c, where ‘a’ is the type of surgery (THA=0, TKA=1), ‘b’, the age divided by the number of 10, and ‘c’, the BMI.
