Abstract

<i>cine</i>-Substitution of 1-methyl-3,6,8-trinitro-2-quinolone by 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds in the presence of NEt<sub>3</sub> occurred efficiently, affording 4-functionalized 6,8-dinitro-2-quinolone derivatives. The addition intermediate was isolated in the reaction with CH<sub>2</sub>(CO<sub>2</sub>Et)<sub>2</sub> and EtONa. Conversion of the isolated intermediate into the <i>cine</i>-substituted product was performed. These results indicate that the present <i>cine</i>-substitution proceeds by the addition-elimination mechanism.
