Abstract

A 36-year-old man admitted with an abdominal mass had a palpable 10×8cm, hard, sharp-edged, nonmobile tumor in the right lower abdomen. Laboratory findings were within normal limits. Abdominal ultrasonograhy showed a multilocular hypoechoic mass. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed a multilocular mass 12cm in diameter with enhancement in the rectus abdominis muscle. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging showed low intensity in T1-weighted imaging, and high intensity in T2-weighted imaging. Because we could not rule out the posibility of malignancy, we resected the tumor. The surgical specimen was 10×8×5cm, and pathological diagnosis was schwannoma. The man was discharged on postoperative day 7. This is the first case, to our knowledge, of schwannoma arising in the rectus abdominis muscle.
