We investigated the frequency of transfusion reactions by direct interview with patients and analyzed the risk factors associated with transfusion reactions. Fifty-nine patients received a total of 367 transfusions during the investigation period. Transfusion reaction occurred in 79 of the 367 transfusions, an unexpectedly high frequency. Main symptoms were fever, urticaria and itching. Among the risk factors analyzed, transfusion reaction was associated with the transfusion history of platelet concentrate and freshfrozen plasma, and number of lots transfused. No association was seen with patient sex, history of pregnancy, blood product, storage time of blood product, or anti-neutrophil, -HLA or -platelet antibody. Closer study must be made to prevent the transfusion reactions, especially nonhemolytic transfusion reactions.
