Long lasting red-emitting phosphorescence properties of Eu3+ in YVO4 compound were investigated. YVO4: Eu3+ shows a red-emitting phosphorescence due to the 5D0 → 7F2 transition of Eu3+. Effects of the firing conditions and Eu2O3 content on the phosphorescent properties of YVO4: Eu3+ samples were discussed in terms of crystallite size of the compound. The phosphorescence intensity and lifetime of YVO4: Eu3+ increased with increasing the crystallite size of compound. The optimum conditions to fabricate YVO4: Eu3+ were determined in terms of phosphorescence lifetime; consequently, firing temperature, time, and atmosphere and Eu2O3 content were 1,100 °C, 3 h, air, and 12.5 mol%, respectively. The phosphorescent lifetime of YVO4: Eu3+ fired under the optimum conditions is approximately 10 min.
