Abstract

To determine whether maternal allergen is transferred into breast milk, we applied ovalbumin to lactating rats and examined their mammary glands using light and transmission electron microscopy. In the lactating rat mammary glands, intravenously injected ovalbumin was detected in the blood vessels, connective tissue, mammary epithelial cells, and lumina of the alveoli and ducts. These results suggest that maternal allergen passes through the mammary epithelial cells and is secreted with breast milk in lactating rats.
