One hundred and six replacements using total knee prosthesis (Kinematic Stabilizer or Kinemax Stabilizer knee) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were followed for 5 to 14 years (mean, 8.6 years) . There were 26 knees with severe varus and valgus deformities and 80 knees with mild deformities (less than 20 degrees varus, 25 degrees valgus) . The knees with mild deformities comprised the control group. The clinical outcome at a mean 8.6 years was similar in the two groups. In the varus group, the average post-operative femorotibial angle was 177.7°, in the valgus group it was 174.8°, and in the control group it was 175.8°. Non-progressive radiolucent lines of 1 mm or less were found around 65.4% of the tibial components on the anteroposterior projections in the group with severe deformities, and 48.8% in the control group. We conclude that Kinematic or Kinemax stabilizer knee can give good overall results in severely deformed knees.
